The Cockapoo is becoming one of America’s favorite designer breeds. And no wonder. This sweet, cuddly pup combines the gentle and loving nature of the Cocker Spaniel with the smaller size and allergy-resistance coat of the Mini Poodle. While this designer breed has gained much attention in the past 25 years, the Cockapoo has been documented back as far as the 1950’s.
A Cockapoo is usually a bright-eyed, scruffy-coated bundle of charm that reminds some masters of their favorite teddy bear. This breed is good-natured, very friendly, and a snuggler. That makes the Cockapoo a good match for homes with children, dogs, and even cats.
The Cockapoo is a designer breed created through the cross of the Cocker Spaniel and the Mini Poodle breed. This breed is recognized by the ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club). This designer breed can also be registered through IDCR (International Designer Canine Registry) and ICA (International Canine Association, Inc).

Temperament
The Cockapoo is an intelligent pup with lots of energy. This dog loves to play chase and can be rambunctious. Many describe this mischievous puppy as merry or fun-loving. While this pup is smart and can learn quickly, he is not always obedient. Focused training will help you teach your Cockapoo puppy to obey commands consistently.
This gentle breed is a good team player and is usually quick to assimilate with other dogs and even cats. This cuddly designer breed does well with children, but his small size makes him vulnerable to injury, so the Cockapoo may be a better choice for homes with older children who can play gently.
Health
The life expectancy for a Cockapoo is between 12 – 15 years. All mixed breed dogs have a better chance of having fewer health concerns because of their genetic diversity, but they may also be susceptible to the health problems of both the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. Health concerns to watch for in your dog are:

- Eye and ear Problems
- Heart disease
To keep your Cockapoo puppy healthy, provide him with daily exercise. Because this breed can have eye and ear issues, you should clean your dog’s ears weekly, and gently wipe the area around his eyes each day to remove any small bits of crust or buildup. Take your dog in for regular vet checkups. With all breeds, it’s important to stay current on all shots and vaccinations.
Coat & Coat Care
The Cockapoo is bred to have the hypoallergenic coat of a Mini Poodle. Your Cockapoo’s coat should be long, silky, and curly. Their coat is usually, but not always, hypoallergenic. This dog loses only small amounts of hair when bathing or brushing.
Daily brushing is recommended to avoid any knotting or matting or their coat. Matting can cause skin irritation. Cleaning around the eyes and ears will help prevent infections.
You may want to trim up around your Cockapoo’s eyes, ears, and muzzle. Trim back the hair growing in between the eyes. Trim the hair inside the ears. Clip the beard at the bottom of the muzzle to prevent messiness when eating or drinking.
