Bernese Mountain Dog mixes are rapidly becoming one of the most popular mixed breeds for their strength, and sweet-natured souls. Deriving from Switzerland, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, long-haired, loving breed that typically make for great family companions. Although any mix can have a long list of lineages that play a factor in their overall personality and traits, most Bernese Mountain Dog mixes are rarely aggressive and are known for being gentle giants.   • Color: The Bernese Mountain Dog’s beautiful coat is often admired and is a core part of the AKC’s breed standards. The Bernese Mountain dog must have a black coat covering most of its body with distinct white markings on the face, chest, feet, and tail. Rust appears in the eyebrows and other areas. Bernese Mountain Dogs with blue eyes or a ground color other than black cannot be registered with the AKC.

Health

The Bernese Mountain Dog’s life expectancy is between 6-9 years. While most Bernese Mountain Dogs are exceptionally hearty, like all breeds, they occasionally experience health issues. Here are some of the more common health issues:

  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
  • von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD)
  • Prone to heat strokes

Food allergies are more common in this breed, so watch your Bernese Mountain Dog’s diet. If your puppy shows signs of itchy or dry skin, check with your vet to see if your pet has allergies. If your pup is vomiting or has diarrhea, call your vet immediately.

Because the Bernese Mountain Dog was bred for life in the Alps, this breed don’t do well in heat. In hot weather, take extra care to keep your dog cool and well-hydrated.

Coat & Coat Care

The Bernese Mountain Dog has a thick, double coat that is woolly on the underside with a long, wavy topcoat.

Most Bernese Mountain Dog Mixes will possess the typical double coat of long hair and black, white and brown colorings associated with their Mother breed. Most mixes will also require brushing 1-2 times a week and should be fully groomed about every 6 weeks.
