Overview
The playful, stout Pembroke Welsh Corgi is beloved for his merry disposition and his expressive face. This ancient breed can be traced back as far as the 1100’s. In fact, the name “Corgi” might be attributed to the Celtic word for “dog” (corgi).
The agile, courageous dog was originally bred for herding sheep and cattle. The Corgi’s size made him ideal for working with cattle. They could nip at the livestock’s heels while avoiding kicks.
Before 1933, the Corgi was a rather obscure breed. But in 1933 King George VI (then Duke of Windsor) gave the Princess Elizabeth a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy, triggering an explosion in the breed’s popularity, which continues to this day.
The tailless Pembroke Welsh Corgi is similar to the long-tailed Cardigan Welsh Corgi. They were considered the same breed until 1934 when the AKC recognized them as a separate breeds.
This breed was recognized by the AKC in 1934 and grouped as Herding.

- Color: The AKC acceptable breed colors for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi are red, sable, fawn, black and tan with or without white markings. The AKC does not accept registrations for Pembroke Welsh Corgis if these dogs have a white body color and red or dark markings or if the coat has distinct bluish or smoky cast. The AKC does not recognize black and white Corgis with no tan present.
Temperament
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an intelligent and active breed. Like many herding breeds, they require lots of exercise to stay calm and centered. Corgis have a strong herding instinct and will try to keep everything that moves in a group. Excited Corgis can nip at heels.
Corgis are good with children and other dogs, especially if they are socialized early on. Pembroke’s like to bark and can be excitable. They are also watchful and will alert owners of activity. They are initially wary of strangers and may be protective or territorial. Thorough socialization in puppy-hood will minimize these traits.
Health
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi lives on average 11-13 years. Like many long-bodied dogs, the Pembroke can be prone to back and joint issues. This breed may occasionally experience the following health issues;

- Degenerative Myelopathy
- Hip Dysplasia
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy
- Epilepsy

Coat & Coat Care
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a double coat with a short, thick, weather-resistant undercoat and longer, coarser outer coat.
This breed’s coat is very easy to maintain. Weekly brushing is sufficient to keep a healthy coat. Brushing more often during seasonal changes may be required to minimize shedding. Bathe only if needed.
