Looking for a Samoyed puppy for sale? These pups have a long history as hunting, herding, and hauling sledges for the Samoyede people in northwestern Siberia. These strong, hard-working canines were brought out of Siberia to serve as sleigh dogs in the 19th century. While they do well in the cold, they are happy to be outdoor or indoor dogs. Because they are true snow dogs, they sometimes struggle in the heat, so watch for heat exhaustion.

While these dogs have been popular in Russia for centuries, the first American Samoyed arrived in the States back in 1906, and have steadily gained popularity in the U.S.

These friendly dogs do very well with children, families, other dogs, and strangers. This athletic breed loves to hunt, so its instincts may be hard to curb around small animals or stuffed toys.

The Samoyed was first registered by the AKC in 1906, and was grouped as Working.

Temperament

If you want to buy a Samoyed puppy, it’s smart to do a little research first. Like many working breeds, these dogs are intelligent, loyal, friendly, and loving. They have been bred as sled dogs, so they are energetic and athletic. They need daily vigorous, outdoor exercise or they can become bored, destructive, or bark excessively.

These pups are very sociable and can get lonely on their own. Don’t leave them alone in a yard or leave them at home for long periods of time. They need to be around people and other dogs to stay calm and centered. It’s also important to start socializing them in puppyhood to reinforce social behaviors.

Your Samoyed will greet strangers as friends, so they aren’t good guard dogs. But they will bark when new people arrive.

Health

If you’re considering adopting a Samoyed puppy, make sure you understand this breed’s health considerations. This is a robust breed that is usually quite healthy. The average life expectancy is between 12-15 years.

The Samoyed breed is prone to Hip Dysplasia. Other health concerns to look for are:

Growing puppies are susceptible to strained muscles, so stick to gentle play until your pup is full grown. With all dogs, stay current on shots and vaccinations. Schedule regular check-ups with your vet.

Coat & Coat Care

Like many snow breeds, they have a double coat that is very thick and dense. Their outercoat is harsh to the touch while the undercoat is soft.

The undercoat sheds a great deal and can come out in clumps, so daily brushing is recommended. This is a breed that sheds heavily twice a year, and you may find that more focused daily brushing is needed during those shedding periods.
