Overview
There are many theories surrounding the Chihuahua’s beginning. It is believed that they originated from Mexico during the times of the Aztecs. The two breeds speculated to be mixed with the Chihuahua are the Techichi & the Chinese Crested. It is also believed that the breed was found in 1850 in the Mexican State of Chihuahua, hense the name of the breed.
The Chihuahua was first registered with the AKC in 1904 and grouped as Toy.

- Color: The Chihuahua comes in a multitude of colors. The coat can be solid, marked, or speckled and in many colors & combinations. The most common colors are fawn, black & tan, white, chocolate and blue merle.
Temperament
The Chihuahua is a playful, intelligent and devoted breed. This little courageous breed will bark to notify their owner of any strangers approaching, making them great watch dogs. This breed requires socialization with other animals to prevent any aggressive behavior. The Chihuahua has also been known to be jealous with their owner’s relationship with other animals & people.
Health
The average life span is between 13 – 16 years. The Chihuahua breed may need extra attention to their teeth and when birthing other health concerns are:
- Seizers
- Patellar Luxation
- Hydrocephalus
- Mitral Valve Heart Disease
Coat & Coat Care
There are 2 varieties of Chihuahuas; The shorthaired and the longhaired. The shorthaired Chihuahua’s coat is tight to the body, shiny, dense and soft to the touch. The longhaired Chihuahua’s coat can be long, slightly wavy and often with an undercoat.
Grooming varies between the shorthaired and longhaired Chihuahuas. The shorthaired version of this breed needs to be brushed 2 -3 times per week to keep a healthy coat. The longhaired on the other hand may need to be brushed on a daily basis. It is also important to pay close attention to this breeds eyes & teeth to avoid certain health issues.
