The Anatolian Shepherd is an ancient guardian breed that is native to Asia Minor. This breed lived outside year round and was used to help fight wolves and used as hunting & herding dogs. They were first recognized by the AKC in 1999 and grouped as Working.

Temperament

The Anatolian Shepherds are intelligent, loyal and easy to train. They are also gentle & enjoy being with their families. This breed is calm but suspicious of strangers, which makes them excellent guard dogs.

Health

The Anatolian Shepherd life expectancy is between 12 – 15 years. Health concerns to watch for are:

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Low Immunity

Coat & Coat Care

Their coat is medium long in length. Their coat is doubled with a rough outer coat and a think under coat.

Brushing 2 – 3 times weekly will help maintain their healthy coat. During shedding season they will require extra attention.
